Good evening friends. We've already discussed a good deal about the uses of prepositions. Now let's see some more special uses of a few prepositions. Carefully observe their uses.
before/after/since/until/till (all indicating time)
I never saw him before now. We had seen him before he saw us.
We go to school after we take breakfast. I reached school after 10.00 a.m.
It's been raining since morning. We've been trying to get our due since long.
We ususally play until/till dask. They did not stop untill/till they reached the destination
for (purpose/intent/interest/cause)
We work for money. Everyone was running for shelter. We are ready to die for the country.
by/with/without (agent/means/manner)
The job was nicely done by him. They were taught a lesson by us.(agent/person)
We reached our destination by bus. He is arriving here by train. (agent/means)
He was hit by a rock. He killed a snake with a stick. (by something)
We cannot live without water. They could not win without our help. (negative of 'with')
N.B.:- Remember that 'by someone' but 'with something'.
They joined with us in the adventure. ('with' here means 'together' - companionship)
but/except ( negative meaning)
All except me joined the party. (all but not I)
All the boys played football but me. (not I)
Absence of preposition
Preposition is omitted in the following cases; such as -------
We do not go to school every Friday. (not on every Friday)
My father came to see me yesterday. (not on yesterday)
We hope to be promoted to class VIII next year. (not in next year)
Plums are more plentiful this year. (not in this year)
As has been said earlier, prepositions usually take a noun/pronoun after them, but sometimes they remain disguised and sometimes detached. Look below:
It's 10.00 o'clock now. (o'clock = of clock -- > disguised)
He is now asleep. (asleep = in sleep -- > disguised)
Where are you coming from? (detached - from where)
I have none to make friend with. (detached - with none)
There's a different kind of preposition. They are derived from the participial form of verbs. Look below:
I've no knowledge concerning his activities. {concern (v)+ing}
I've nothing to say regarding his conduct. {regard (v)+ing}
That's all for now friends. Feel free to ask any question. Good night. Sweet dreams.

Good evening friends. Last night we talked about a few more prepositions and their uses. Now let's talk about more uses of some prepositions.
at/in/on
He is at home. but - He is in the house.
We are at the station.
but - We are in/on the train.
She is on her bicycle.
but - She is in her blue dress.
A calender is hanging on the wall.
but - There is a nail in the wall.
There were many people in the shop.
but - Turn left at the next shop.
A steamer is peddling in the Buriganga.
but - Ahsan Manjil stands on the Buriganga.
There was a serious accident in the road.
but - There are many many vehicles running on the road.
Now let's talk about how prepositions can also be used as adverbs. In fact prepositions used adverbially are called adverb particles. Look below:
He rode on a bicycle. (preposition)
but, He went on. (adverb particle)
We went down the lane. (preposition)
but - A stone came rolling down. (adverb particle)
Jack and Jill went up the hill. (preposition)
but - A fireball went up. (adverb particle)
That's all for now. Feel free to ask any question. Good night. Sweet dreams.
